Cookies - a common dessert all around the world

What is "cookies"?

Yes! We do have “cookies” on the Internet, but not that kind of dessert cookies. It is called “Cookie” or HTTP Cookie, Browser Cookie. In fact, they’re not even physical objects. And they do a great deal of the work that makes it possible for you to browse the Internet—and they can cause trouble if you don’t know how to manage them.

If you’ve visited a new website on your phone or computer, you’ve probably seen a notification informing you that the page is using cookies to track you and asking you to agree to let it happen. The site invites you to read its “cookie policy,” (which, let’s be honest, you’re not going to do), and it may tell you the tracking is to “enhance” your experience. But in the end, most of us just tediously click “yes” and move on. If you reject the cookie tracking, sometimes, the website won’t work. But most of the time, you can just keep browsing. They’re not too different from the annoying pop-up ads we all ignore when we’re online.

So what is Cookie? And why does every website want you to accept its Cookie?

A computer “cookie” is a packet of data that websites send to your device that the sites then use to monitor you and remember certain information about you — like what’s in your shopping cart on an e-commerce site or your login information. So if you are MMOers, you have to pay attention to this “cookie”. Your computer stores it in a file located inside your web browser. (To help you find it, this file is often called “Cookies.”)

The purpose of the cookie is to help the website keep track of your visits and activity. This isn’t always a bad thing. For example, many online retailers use cookies to keep track of the items in a user’s shopping cart as they explore the site. Without cookies, your shopping cart would reset to zero every time you clicked a new link on the site. But, with MMOers, they have to use many accounts to shop and with one computer, one cookie, all of their accounts will be suspended.

A website might also use cookies to keep a record of your most recent visit or to record your login information. Many people find this useful so that they can store passwords on commonly used sites, or simply so they know what they have visited or downloaded in the past. And again, it is not safe for MMOers to log in multiple accounts with just one cookie because the web-server will base on Cookie to detect you.

Different types of cookies keep track of different activities. Session cookies are used only when a person is actively navigating a website; once you leave the site, the session cookie disappears. Tracking cookies may be used to create long-term records of multiple visits to the same site. Authentication cookies track whether a user is logged in or not, and under what name.

Why does every website want you to accept its cookies?

Under normal circumstances, cookies cannot transfer viruses or malware to your computer. Because the data in a cookie doesn’t change when it travels back and forth, it has no way to affect how your computer runs.

However, some viruses and malware may be disguised as cookies. Third-party tracking cookies can also cause security concerns since they make it easier for web-servers to track where you are going and what you are doing online. On the one hand, users should know what they’re getting into and what companies are tracking about them when they go to a website.

It’s certainly a good thing that tech companies and website owners are being more transparent with users about what they’re doing with their data and how they’re tracking them.

But when it comes to cookies, these pop-up notifications aren’t doing much. The internet and its biggest websites are constructed in a way that gives these sites easy access to users’ data, and they can essentially do whatever they want with it. And this is not beneficial for people Making Money Online (MMO).

And, frankly, we’re abetting this behavior. Most users just click or tap “okay” to clear the pop-up and get where they’re going. They rarely opt to learn more about what they’re agreeing to. The majority of internet users don’t read terms of service or privacy policies — so they’re probably not reading cookie policies, either. They’re many pages long, and they’re not written in language that’s simple enough for the average person to understand.
